So when you thought Toynami is gone for good after their Masterpiece series, they make a comeback with their Robotech scaled down 1/100 toy-line celebrating Robotech 30th Anniversary. The toy is presented in a box with transparent plastic window showing the actual figure in battroid mode. My first impression of the toy is that the plastic looks kind of low budget. When the box was opened, the backdrop card separate the figure from a set of accessories on plastic insert. Accessories include clear cockpit canopy, landing gears, missiles, rifle (Rifle attachable to the forearm without using clip), optional hands and display stand.
Honestly, I'm impressed with the ingenuity of the display as it can be assembled to support all three modes of this veritech fighter, as such allowing the toy to be displayed in various dramatic poses. The feet or afterburner are painted with some chrome. When I held toy in my hand, it feels light and made of cheap plastic. Then again the toy held itself well and the weight is well-distributed. At first, I'm pretty paranoid of breaking the frail plastic while transforming however the toy more durable than I imagined. Nothing break with occasional joints pop out. The toy is really nimble and extremely poseable. I would say this is nice toy to play with however lack the collection value. Personally, I think the toy's look can be enhanced by adding some panel lines. In plane mode, the toy seems to lack proportionality and landing gears too high.

While i am not really fond of Harmony Gold's debacle over Macross series i had to admit that those Toynami Macross toys are not too shabby. Seriously i have been crossing my hand on that Armored Valkyrie i saw a while ago.
I saw somewhere else the last offer of Arcadia, for its Macross Line and I must say that, albeit the figure is impressive in terms of quality, accessories and bigger in size (1/60 scale), the price point (nearly US$400) puts it in the level of unaffordable items for most collectors... In my humble opinion, Toynami is clearly targeting this piece as a toy -despite the wording: "(This is not a toy) For the adult collector", in the box- and you can feel that it has a vintage "taste", maybe from the toys of the 80s and 90s, when the extreme level of detail and accuracy were not a realistic goal for any company in this industry...
We are beyond the 2000s, yeah, but I think that for the price point of this Toynami piece, you get something decent and sturdy, which is fair; I guess it was something you had in mind when you got this toy, pal... Also, you already have other impressive Macross figures in your collection !!!... =D

The heart is with Macross too but glad that the anime was glorified under the wings of Robotech. It's a fun toy to play with but still my fav play toy is still chunky monkey : )
To me, Arcadia and Yamato are the same. I don't know the backstory but Arcadia is selling Macross at hijacking prices, in a way can be quite a turn off. Toynami in a way provided some alternative of the toy in smaller scale and makes the toy more available to the western continents. Though I will consider Bandai Hi-Metal series in terms of workmanship for 1/100 scale.
