機甲戦記ドラグナー 1/100 XD-01 Metal Armour Dragonar 1 Custom Resin Kit

Metal Armor Dragonar was created by Sunrise and aired from 1987 to 1988 as a starter series to get new fans into mecha anime, and a potential successor to the Gundam franchise. So much so it has some similarities to the first Gundam in terms of colour scheme, the V-Fin and eye design. Dragonar 1 design is based on an illustration by famous Japanese anime director Masami Ōbari. This mecha is no stranger to those child of the 80's growing up with giant robots as their favourite things and whoever are into games like SRW (Super Robot Wars).

I saw this resin kit in an auction and I told myself I should really get this. I have no clue the manufacturer and for what I know, it's probably garage kit or scratch built. It kind of stands out in my display and make up a unique piece of my collection. The mecha probably got its name inspired by Dragon which I assumed comes from the dragon head helmet design and its flight ability with wings. The resin kit was built with a mild departure from original anime design as it has an extra chassis on the chest, like a bonnet cover to the hollow portion of the chest. This make the check more pointy and simpler which IMHO is quite an innovative modded.

The flight pack consist a very wide wing span and multiple thrusters on the rear with even jet engine turbines on the shoulders. The flight pack design seems to be adopted by Gundam Seed as the aile flight unit. Its armament includes the handrail-gun, and laser swords on the skirt and super hybrid shield. This kit is very much like a statue only movement joints at the arms. We can see neat marking when paint was applied to the kit and straight panel lines.

It seems like the figure is a different model as compared to the illustration above.

The chest has been modded, that’s the difference.
